1>“Lighting up the Nepalese Village” Promotion of Thermo Electric Generators and Eco Fagoa Stove in partnership with Colorado State University, Colorado USA
Description:
The project, which won the prestigious “Mondialogo Engineering Award” in 2005, proposed solutions for improving rural kitchen environment in developing countries. It was jointly prepared by the teams from Nepal: Engineers Without Borders-Nepal (EWB/Nepal) and Sustainable Technology and Adaptive Research and Implementation Center, Nepal (STARIC/Nepal) and USA: Engineering Without Borders-Colorado State University (EWB-CSU) and Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory, Colorado State University under the Leadership of Mr. Sachin Joshi.

Projects under taken and completed by STARIC/Nepal
1> Research and dissemination of high hill improved metal cook stoves.
Description:
This project was basically an action research project, 12 stoves each were disseminated in two project areas, to get the users’ feed backs about the newly developed stove. After collecting and incorporating users’ feedback, a final product (cook stove) was developed which was later sent to both the project area.

Objective:
To identify an effective, low cost improved metal cook stove suitable for hilly areas in Dolpa and Solukhumbu.
Output:
This project developed the cook stove designed under the internationally proven rocket stove principle which is energy efficient in comparison with the existing stoves found in the project area. The stove is light in weight reducing the cost of transportation. This new stove can be knocked down into sheets which allows for less volume during transportation and many stoves can be transported in a single go.

2>Research on Low Cost Portable Metal Stove
Description:
Basically this project was of consulting type under which a portable, one pothole cook stove was designed and tested in the laboratory. The stove is designed following the internationally proven rocket stove principle which is energy efficient in comparison with the existing stoves found in the project area. The stove is light in weight hence portable.

3>Design and Development of Forced Draught High Performance Heavy Impeller for Fixed Chimney Brick Kiln
Description:
This was a consulting project under which a high performance heavy impeller fan for fixed chimney brick kiln needs to be designed and supervise the fabrication of the designed product as per the client’s requirement. The design was based on the existing fan which the client was using in his kiln. The new fan is the modified product according to the requirement.

5>Demonstration of Appropriate Alternative Energy Technologies for Terai, Nepal at Lamhai, Dang
Description:
This exhibition/first hand demonstration was organized by the women users group of Deukhuri – Dang , mainly Parijat, Pragatishil on appropriate alternative energy technologies in Lamahi, Dang on the 13th to 15th of January 2006, which was supported by STARIC/Nepal in joint association of WWF/Np. This was an opportunity for the local women of Dang to exhibit, demonstrate, orient and promote the efficient use of environment friendly technologies, which are directly or indirectly related to ease the pressure on deforestation.

Objective:
The objectives of exhibition were as follow:
• To demonstrate the proven environmentally friendly appropriate technologies
• To create awareness on the importance and potential benefits of the technologies
• To provide an opportunity towards informing the potential entrepreneurs on the supply, financing and installation of the technologies
• To create demand of the potential technologies and help promote them for their utilization to improve the socio-economic status of the rural communities

6>Technical Quality Monitoring of Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS)
Description:
The project was basically a study project, which dealt with assessing the technical quality of the ICS constructed by the promoters trained by the local partner organizations under the service providing organizations appointed by AEPC/ESAP. As the requirement of the client, 12 programme districts among 35 programme district of the client were randomly selected. In total 525 households were visited and monitoring of ICS was conducted. Different performance tests were performed in around 25% of the total number of the randomly selected ICS.
